Tobacco cultivation in Germany

Tobacco was grown in Germany, but the area under cultivation and production have declined significantly in recent decades. Today, tobacco cultivation in Germany is a niche production that is limited to a few regions in the south-west and south-east of the country.

Tobacco cultivation in Germany has a long history dating back to the 17th century. Tobacco production in Germany peaked at around 40,000 hectares in the 1950s. However, the area under cultivation has declined sharply in recent decades, and in 2020 only around 2,200 hectares were still used for tobacco cultivation.

Most tobacco growing areas are in the federal states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony. Most tobacco farmers in Germany produce tobacco for cigars and pipe tobacco, while the cultivation of tobacco for cigarettes has declined sharply overall due to the decline in smoking.

Tobacco cultivation in Germany is a controversial issue as tobacco production is associated with health risks. Some organizations are calling for a ban on tobacco growing in Germany, while others argue that it has a long history and also has economic importance.
